One of the oldest, but still hottest techniques – especially in the Ozarks and in newer reservoirs where timber still stands – is to swim a grub. It's a technique practiced by anglers from the weekend-warrior level all the way up to the tour level.

Table Rock? Ouachita? Summertime? You'd better believe that anyone who's winning money is probably swimming a grub.

It's a little funny that such a hot (and historic) presentation has somewhat fallen by the wayside in other locales. But the truth remains, a single- or double-tail grub is still one of the best, most versatile baits ever designed.

But that doesn't mean that grub evolution has halted. In fact, to help push the envelope of modern grub-fishing, Berkley recently introduced its new Ripple Shad.

Keys to the Ripple Shad are its segmented sides and oversize, boot-style tail – both contribute to a powerful swimming action and more vibration in the water.

Ripple Shad grubs are made with Berkley PowerBait scent, so fish hold on longer, and they're available in 3- and 4-inch sizes. As well, the segmentation creates more surface area, hence better dispersion of the PowerBait scent.

To rig the 3-inch Ripple Shad for swimming, string it on an 1/8- to 1/4-ounce darter or ballhead jig with a 1/0 or 2/0 hook. Be sure the bait's rigged straight for optimum swimming action. For the 4-inch bait, use a slightly heavier jighead with a 3/0 or 4/0 hook.

Fish it through timber, across points, or anywhere else bass wait to ambush passing bait.
